Sometimes, common sense does prevail- it just takes longer to remove your anterior from your posterior

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished- an update

A few days ago, I wrote here about a 15-year-old boy at Caney Creek High School in Montgomery County who was facing expulsion for loaning his asthma inhaler to his girlfriend. The fact the the girl was in the midst of a serious asthma attack seemed to be lost on the pointy-headed trolls who chant "zero tolerance" as their mantra and raison d' etre.

Belatedly professing to having being exposed to the blinding white light of reason (and a HUGE PR backlash), the district says it will allow the boy to return after the Christmas holiday break.

Montgomery County teenager, expelled from school for letting his girlfriend use his prescription asthma inhaler, will face no criminal charges, his mother said Friday.

The 15-year-old's family reached an agreement with school officials and attorneys during a hearing at Caney Creek High School on Friday.

The boy can return after the Christmas holidays, but his family said they have decided he will be home-schooled.

On Sept. 23, the teen accompanied his girlfriend to the nurse's office because she was having asthma problems. The nurse reported he lent the girl the inhaler.

Family members say he was trying to help, and noted that the girl uses the same prescription.

In effect, then, the district is finding a way to have their cake and eat it too. The boy is still effectively suspended for 2 1/2 months, but now administrators can point to their "leniency" while at the same time trumpeting the holiness and inviolability of "zero tolerance". In essence, they have come up with the perfect way to do absolutely nothing to address their intolerance and insensitivity.

I think the parents have the right idea. Their son did nothing wrong in helping his girlfriend. If my son were to be punished for that, I'd pull him out of that narrow-minded, intolerant atmosphere and home-school him as well. Someone should be pinning a medal on that boy's chest, not suspending him for "distribution".

All right, ya'll. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and repeat after me:

"Zero tolerance...."
"Zero tolerance...."
"Zero tolerance...."
"Zero tolerance...."

There; don't you feel better already??
