Clark Exits Presidential Bid After Losses
He emphasized the importance of national security in this race against a wartime president. He will no doubt continue to contribute to the life of our party and our country. We look forward to working with him to defeat George Bush and bring change to America.
- Sen. John Kerry
It's been a really disillusioning experience. We sacrificed a hell of a lot for this country over 34 years. We lived in a damn trailer when I was a freshman in high school.
I still believe that Wesley Clark is- OK, was- the best candidate among the Democrats in terms of his ability to match up with George W. Bush. For whatever reasons, Clark was never able to capitalize on the initial excitement created by his candidacy. Last night, Clark recognized the reality of the task he faced and took his hat out of the ring. In doing so, he displayed the class and dignity that has been a hallmark of his campaign.
In the end, perhaps that class and grace was part of Clark's undoing. If Clark had been more aggressively partisan when it came to addressing the travesty that is the George Bush Imperial Presidency, it's possible the media would have paid closer attention. It's not as if John Kerry has taken a different approach from Clark, but for some reason Kerry is the one with the burgeoning bandwagon. No, the primary system is not a perfect system, but it's what we have. Perhaps with a different system- one that allows voters to understand candidates as more than just sound bites on the 6 o'clock news- the results might have been different. C'est la vie.... John Kerry is the hand Democrats have been dealt, and now it's time to get behind our candidate and concentrate on the real goal.
Now then, in the spirit of this Anyone But Bush campaign, I am willing to wholeheartedly endorse John Kerry and get behind his effort to take back the White House. I believe that Our Sainted And Yet Illegitimate President will have his hands full come this fall. He deserves nothing less.
