Texan living in Madrid: 'This is Spain's 9-11'

Life here is sad and heavy. ... The metro was all but empty because people were afraid to travel in it. Pictures of bloody faces are everywhere and everyone is on their cell phone, all having the same conversation, 'Yes, I'm okay. Are you and your family?' This is Spain's 9-11. And even though every day I feel totally foreign here, right now I feel completely connected with this country and its people. Some friends have asked me if I will return to the States because of this. All I can say is that I can´t return right now. I can´t leave this country in pain because now it's my country too and I share in its grief.
