It's easy to be resolute when someone else is doing the dying

Gee, I guess if I'm between 18 and 26 I should be really really scared of voting for W, huh.

Isn't that the idea behind comics like this and the one posted earlier? Frighten youthful voters, who are typically under informed and easily swayed by emotional rhetoric?

The fact of the matter is that a draft is highly unlikely, and the chances of needing one don't depend a lot on who is elected in November. There are some in congress however, who seem to favor such actions...

Click here to read HR 163: "To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes."

The bill is sponsored by 14 congressional representatives. ALL 14 are DEMOCRATS

This proposed legislation is absurd and obviously born of purely partisan political motives. It will likely die in committee, which is a good thing. Imagine the impacts of a federal program of this size and scope. Assuming we pay people for their service, where does the money come from? (Three guesses: Higher taxes, higher taxes and higher taxes.)

Perhaps this is what Senator Kerry has in mind when he boasts that he can "create jobs."

*Frighten youthful voters, who are typically under informed and easily swayed by emotional rhetoric?*

Gee, bob, this sounds an awful like what Republicans are trying to do the the voting population as a whole....

It does seem similar superficially, but when you look deeper the differences are more than evident.

For example, the two political cartoons you posted were created by American artists. A draft is not needed, yet both pictures suggest that it will happen, and you happily post this "humor" with full knowledge of its fictional basis and likely effects. WHY?

HR 163 was created by 14 partisan democrats who would seek to use their power as legislators to mis-inform the public and emotionally sway people to vote against Bush.

The continuing threat against our nation is real.

If people think that one candidate is more likely than another to gain victory over those who delcared war on the United States, they have every right to express that opinion -- in the press, on blogs, on the radio, and in the voting booth. This right applies to candidates as well as voters.

So what we really have here is an attempt to compare a couple of artists excersizing free speech and drawing comics based on a fictional premise with the real and present threat that is in fact, a legitimate and vital topic of this election.
