Tom Green County mulls faith-based prison

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Tom Green County commissioners gave extra preparation time Saturday to a group proposing a faith-based prison in San Angelo.

Hmm…it’s an intriguing idea, I suppose…just as long as the prison isn’t based on Old Testament principles. I could see the old “eye for an eye” thing getting way out of hand very easily.

Realisticallly, a faith-based prison might be an idea with some merit…except for the whole “separation of Church and State”. If tax dollars are going to fund a prison based on Christian prinicples, is this not the State implicitly endorsing a religion- in this case Christianity? And is that the sort of thing tax dollars should be used for?

Clearly, prisons in the conventional sense are by and large dehumanizing warehouses. The idea of a faith-basd prison, while not exactly new, is certainly the sort of thing worth exploring…just not with tax dollars.

Of course, this IS Texas, where the separation of Church and State is generally viewed as some sort of Atheist plot to turn our children into godless homosexuals….
