Argument over illegal cockfight leads to fatal shooting

An argument over the outcome of an illegal cockfight in Fort Bend County erupted into gunfire Saturday, leaving one man dead and another seriously wounded, authorities said. The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m. after the match in the 6600 block of Beard Road in Needville. Jose Alfredo Morales, 32, of Los Fresnos, was slain at the scene, while a second victim, Jose Ramon Jauregue, 23, of Corpus Christi, was taken by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he remains in stable condition, Fort Bend County sheriff’s officials said Sunday. More than 100 spectators were at the match when the alleged assailant, known only as “Rudy,” became irate and pulled out a firearm. He shot at the victims as they ran toward a parked car, deputies said.

OK, a show of hands…how many of you read the headline and then snickered (he said “illegal cockfight”..heehee)? Yeah, I know; you’re all about the chickens, right? Here’s what I want to know, though: since all these maroons were at an illegal cockfight to begin with, why all the fuss when one of them begins to shoot the place (and the people) up? Not that I’m about to condone murder and mayhem, but these fools were already breaking the law. Surely, they can’t claim to be surprised when someone goes postal on them? Jeebus…if you’re going to engage in something as patently illegal as cockfighting, you pretty much get what you deserve.

Just a collection of Darwin Award nominees looking for a place to happen….
