This week in Jesusland 2.11.07

(As ever, many thanks to my friends at The Sinner’s Guide To The Evangelical Right and DefCon)

Well, this week in Jesusland was cold enough that most good, God-fearing Christians stayed indoors and under the covers, where they were hard at work trying to produce more good, God-fearing Christian young ‘uns and future warriors for the faith.

Nine months from now, we’ll no doubt see a veritable explosion of little Christian warriors, who, in just a few short years will be ready to die for American imperialism Republican foreign policy Jesus.

In the meantime, there’s still enough hyper-religious weirdness to keep us going for yet another week.

Same as it ever was….

  • Ted Haggard Says Evangelicals Have the ‘Best Sex Life’: Much has been made of America’s so-called religious divide, but few of the discussions and debates resemble Alexandra Pelosi’s new film, “Friends of God.” The HBO documentary shows the Rev. Ted Haggard, the former president of the National Association of Evangelicals, talking frankly about how evangelical Christians have sex more than any other religious group …. Apparently, they also get more massages from muscular gay men and more high-quality meth than any other religious group.

  • Ted Haggard: Now “Completely Heterosexual”: This just in from the Denver Post. Ted Haggard is not gay!…. In other news, Isaiah Washington is not a homophobe, and Pee Wee Herman no longer masturbates in public!!

  • Edwards Decision To Keep Bloggers May Risk Catholic Vote: One of the bloggers, Amanda Marcotte, wrote on the blog Pandagon on Dec. 26, “The Catholic Church is not about to let something like compassion for girls get in the way of using the state as an instrument to force women to bear more tithing Catholics.”….In the end, Edwards decided to keep Marcotte and Melissa McKwen on staff. But “it was a tough decision,” a campaign adviser said in an interview today, “and there was a lot of back and forth. It was certainly tough balancing what they’ve said in their private lives with how we want the campaign to be represented.”…. Yeah, for some strange reason, people really resent having the reality of their religious bigotry pointed out to them.

  • Two more churches leave NC convention over gay policy: On Feb. 4, St. John’s Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C., became the second church in a week to decide to break ties with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina over its new anti-gay policy. Four days earlier, members of Park Road Baptist Church, also in Charlotte, voted likewise to sever ties with the group. The decisions came as a result of the convention’s move in 2006 to cut ties with congregations that affirm homosexuality or that are aligned with organizations that convention officials view as affirming homosexuality.… The sad thing is that it always comes as such a tremendous surprise when some actually practices Christian charity.

  • Haggard’s Former Church Shuts Him Out, Muzzles Him, And Pays Him To Leave Town: Even though Ted Haggard is now “completely heterosexual”, his former church wants nothing to do with him. A new agreement signed by Haggard and the leaders of New Life Church has disowned the disgraced pastor from his evangelical family. Didn’t Jesus teach his followers to forgive?…. Sure, but forgiveness doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to welcome the liar and hypocrite back as if nothing had happened. I think it’s a good thing that New Life Church feels it appropriate to disassociate itself from Haggard. Unfortunately, their decision robs pundits like me of some priceless punch lines.

  • Transgender Minister Professor Fights Firing by Michigan Christian University: A private, Christian university is firing a transgender professor who began appearing as a woman on campus in 2005. John Nemecek, 55, who goes by Julie Marie Nemecek and often wears a wig and dress, is fighting the dismissal by Spring Arbor University, which takes effect June 1. The ordained Baptist minister has filed a discrimination claim with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.… Jeez, if you think about it, Spring Arbor should be thrilled. They’re actually getting TWO professors for the price of one!

  • Super Bowl Coach To Be Honored By Radical Right Anti-Gay Group: Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy will be the honored guest at the March 20, 2007 annual banquet of the Indiana Family Institute (IFI), the state’s leading lobbying force against gay rights. The IFI prides itself on its sixteen-year history of “opposing all efforts to create or advance special civil or legal rights for homosexuals. The IFI is closely aligned with Dr. James Dobson’s Focus on the Family, an anti-gay organization of long standing. On the Hoosier Family website, Dungy is prominently pictured in his Colts cap and jacket…. Hey, c’mon now; it’s not hatred. It’s just that some folks are more equal than others….particularly if they happen to be Christians.
