A nut in a World War II Nazi military uniform aims his bayonet-tipped rifle at Seattle cops and is shot dead. A distraught guy fires a gun in the air from his garage and three Los Angeles police cut him down. An angry old Colorado ski bum plots an epic four-pronged terror attack on the rich people of Aspen, but he shoots himself in his Jeep Cherokee before detonating the four bombs. Across the country, wrecked Americans chose to go completely insane on New Year's. Welcome to 2009. It's going to be awful.
Well, here it is...January 3, 2009. Happy New Year...looks pretty much like the sucky old year, doesn't it? Yessiree...ya gotta love how everyone hits January 1st all full of hopeyness and optimism and good cheer...and by January 3rd we begin to realize that the only thing that's changed is the year we write on our checks (that's if anyone actually still even writes checks anymore).
I'm an optimistic sort, so I'm going to hope for better things. Unfortunately, most of what happens around me is completely out of my control, so, like most of us, I'm reducing to the role of interested observer. 2009 will hopefully be a year of change...'cuz Lord knows that we're sorely in need of it after the past eight years.
Me? I'm just looking forward to Thursday, because I'll be on vacation for a few days, and if all goes according to plan, I'll get to relax and have some fun. Happy New Year, y'all; I hope this will be a good one for all of us.
