A reminder of just how far we have to go...or, Great Moments in Hate 2012

Hate is the consequence of fear; we fear something before we hate it; a child who fears noises becomes a man who hates noises.

  • Cyril Connolly

Hate is of all things the mightiest divider, nay, is division itself. To couple hatred, therefore, though wedlock try all her golden links, and borrow to tier aid all the iron manacles and fetters of law, it does but seek to twist a rope of sand.

  • John Milton

With MLK’s birthday having been celebrated as a national holiday on Monday, you probably found yourself reflecting on how far we’ve come. You might have been thinking about how the distance between races has diminished and how racial harmony is more evident now than ever. You’d be right…and you’d also be very, very wrong.

Thanks to the magic of Facebook (via Buzzfeed), I bring you The 40 Absolutely Worst People In America. Race relations may be better than ever in some respects, but that’s not to say that there isn’t a significant cohort of knuckle-dragging troglodytes out there who are still convinced that White Makes Right. I think you’ll find that the level of discourse amongst these racists is about what you’d expect for people who believe that they’re the apotheosis of humanity. After reading some of these status updates, it seems clear that most of these reprobates are deeply mired in an ignorant, hateful, White Trash mentality with little hope of escape. I could go on, but I think these knuckle-draggers do a more than adequate job of hoisting themselves on their own petards…not that any of them would know what a petard is.

I can only hope that reserved parkings spaces in Hell are waiting for these folks. They’ve earned them.
