Reacting to a Democratic colleagues apparently incendiary request to celebrate a Latino American day, State Rep. Cecil Ash (R) declared that he’d support the idea as long as there’s a holiday for white people too. “I’m supportive of this proposition. I just want them to assure me that when we do become in the minority you’ll have a day for us,” he said. Ash was “trying to lighten things up,” but when CBS 5 asked if he was serious about a Caucasian holiday, he offered an unequivocal “yes”….
Arizona has certainly made a name for itself as perhaps the looniest, most hate-riven state in the Union. While other states have distinguished themselves in their collective hatred of Brown People, Arizona continue to raise the bar for crazy and bigoted.
We’ve long celebrated holidays for minorities in recognition of the contributions they’ve made and the oppression they’ve suffered at the hands of the White majority. This isn’t my attempt to engage in White-bashing- Hell, I’m White myself- but I fail to see how a majority group can consider themselves oppressed. “A day for us”…really? You’re a member of the majority race in this country. Virtually every institution in this country is set up to benefit White folks…and Ash is getting exercised over a request to celebrate a day important to Latinos?
As CBS 5 notes, some Arizonans were supportive of the idea. “Good idea,” said one woman. “Like they have Cinco de Mayo for Mexicans. We need something for whites.”
Except that we already have a national holiday. It’s called Super Bowl Sunday.
