Some things actually are more important than politics

Nancy Reagan bids poignant farewell over Ronnie's coffin

Whether you come down on the Right or on the Left; no matter how you feel about Ronald Reagan...anyone with a shred of humanity has got to feel for Nancy Reagan.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Nancy Reagan gently laid her head on ex-president Ronald Reagan's flag-draped coffin in the first of many farewells that will culminate this week in a grand state funeral.

In a poignant moment after the first religious service honouring Reagan, his frail widow, 82, touched the coffin of her husband of 52 years and briefly pressed her cheek against the casket as she wept.

The former first lady appeared in public for the first time since Reagan died Saturday for a brief service at the presidential library in California where his casket went on display to allow thousands to pay their last respects.

I only hope that, if I were ever to find myself in a similar situation, I would handle it with the class, the grace, and the dignity that Nancy Reagan has displayed. To watch your spouse disappear from you over the course of ten years has got to be an unimaginably harrowing and painful experience. She certainly deserves to be in all our thoughts and prayers.
